Deon Abrams & Max Peple-Abrams, owners and winemakers at Grayhaven Winery in Gum Spring, Virginia share a passion for adventure that's evident in everything from their wine making style to their approach to crafting winery culture for visitors and staff.

The couple took the helm of Max's family vineyard and winery, Grayhaven, in 2002, establishing the signature grape of Deon's homeland South Africa in the vineyards and cultivating the winery as a welcoming destination for people of all ages and cultures.

Founded in 2006, South African Wine Festival has brought some of South Africa's best talent, wine, winemakers and wine experts to the small town of Gum Spring, just outside of Richmond, VA.

The inspiration came during Max 's first visit to South Africa in 1998. "It was the least like what I was expecting of any place I've ever visited.  We don't often see South Africa in our popular movies and media in the US, and most of us will never have the opportunity  or resources to visit"

A plan was devised and in 2006 the couple, along with staff and volunteers, and the whole community really, set to bring a little bit of South Africa to central Virginia.   Since then, the festival has garnered loyal support from visitors throughout Virginia and beyond, making it an enduring tradition spanning 20 years.
